Pregnancy is an opportunity for women to become fully acquainted with their bodies. The more they learn about their changing form during the 9 month process, the more they will be better prepared to face birth. Prenatal yoga is a wonderful way to check in weekly with the myriad of changes in both your body and your baby’s body. Prenatal Yoga with Courtney is open to all pregnant woman regardless of where you are in your pregnancy and how much yoga experience you have before walking into class. Courtney’s class is offered on Fridays from 11:30-12:30 at the Hampshire Regional YMCA. The class is ongoing without any registration necessary and is available to non-members for only $10.
A typical prenatal class will consist of a long centering to quiet your mind. This is followed by a gentle warm up with awareness on opening the chest and releasing jaw, neck and shoulder tension. As the class progresses there is more of an emphasis on strengthening the upper body, low back and the safe core supports available during pregnancy. Once the body is warmed and loose, there is a series of hip openers and an examination of good movements and postures for birth. The class usually ends with a 10 minute final relaxation and brief meditation on the stages of the baby’s growth and guided imagery to overcome challenges in your pregnancy. Other topics might include pelvic floor strengthening, breathing techniques, relaxation methods and sharing among the expectant mothers.
