Why Are You Here?
If you made it this far there is something about your health that is not quite right. Maybe this is a new concern or something that has brought you through the door of countless specialists or practitioners. Either way you are tired of being uncomfortable and you are thirsty for change. Whatever your ailment, whatever your story, you deserve a compassionate advocate equipped to maneuver your complex journey to wellness.
Who Are You?
You are probably a woman if you are still searching this website, though I do treat the occasional man. You are most likely dealing with some issue pertaining to menstruation, menopause, pregnancy, or sleep. You either don’t want to pursue hormone replacement (or manipulation) to make the situation better or you have tried it and not seen the results you want. You want to be the expert in your own health and recognize that there are odd little patterns about your body that Western Medicine doesn’t seem interested in. If you have ever said to your doctor “it’s probably not important, but I noticed…” and been disappointed when they said it was unrelated, then you are already skilled at recognizing the amazing connections between various systems of the body. You are ready to pay attention and really listen to your body’s messages because you want to take responsibility for your health.
What Services Are Available?
Who Am I?
I am Courtney Hill Wulsin, owner of Window of Heaven Acupuncture & Yoga. I started teaching yoga in 2007 as a way to make money while I wrote my first novel. It never occurred to me when I started teaching that it would instead become my creative outlet and my career. When I found my teacher Patty Townsend at Yoga Center Amherst and started studying Embodyoga I knew that this was not just the best job ever, it was my calling. I have since layered Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine and birth work onto my yoga teaching. Almost every patient I treat will walk out with some sort of breath work or yoga pose to practice in between sessions and almost every student who studies yoga with me will have a growing knowledge of Chinese Medicine and anatomy. Unlike most healers, I am really a teacher. I want to teach you how to care for your individual body and keep it healthy.
What Are My Qualifications, Licenses, Degrees, Etc?
I am a Massachusetts Licensed Acupuncturist and Herbalist, 500-hour Embodyoga® Trained Yoga Teacher, Prenatal and Postpartum Doula and Reiki Master. I have a Masters degree in Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine from the New England School of Acupuncture and a Bachelors Degree in Literature and Dance from Bennington College. Window of Heaven Acupuncture & Yoga is the business I created to practice what I have learned from my understanding and continuous study of yoga, dance, communication, secrets, the feminine spirit, menstruation, birth, nature, human anatomy, sleep cycles and the ever mystifying nervous system.
Why Am I A Healer?
In my mid-twenties I found myself working in the mental health industry in a job that was both traumatizing and depleting. I stopped sleeping, lost my appetite and began to slowly wilt. The lack of sleep led first to exhaustion and eventually a very dark depression. That job helped me realize I wanted a career where I could bear witness and participate in the turning point of people’s lives. My strength was not in the collecting of stories but in teaching and empowering people how to reconnect with their physical bodies and make sustainable healthy change in their lives.
What Is The Difference Between My Office and the Doctor’s Office?
I am in practice on my own because I like to make my own rules. I pick up my own phone during business hours if I don’t have a patient. If someone is calling and not trying to sell me the best google position than I want to talk to them. If someone is struggling I will spend time on the phone giving them lifestyle adjustments or dietary suggestions until I can get them in for a consult or first treatment. I keep openings in my schedule for emergency appointments, overdue birth preparation patients and acute sickness in ongoing patients. If someone hasn’t slept in five days or is two weeks past their due date and desperate, I want to be able to accommodate them. I also keep real sheets on my treatment table and treat people in hour or longer sessions. You are not only invited, but encouraged to fall asleep while visiting my office. Oh, and you always have to take off your shoes and socks.
What Is My Goal For All My Patients?
I am obsessed with comfort and strive to help my patients reach levels of health they need assistance even imagining. For nearly a decade I have worked as a health education advocate, teaching people what ideal health looks and feels like. If someone walks in and is suffering from pain anywhere in the body I want to get rid of it. If someone isn’t sleeping or doesn’t have an appetite, I’m ready to start working. The number one reason you should book a consult with me is that my standard of health will always be higher than yours.
When Is Acupuncture The Best Medicine?
Any time you go to the doctor and they say that there isn’t anything wrong with you (and you disagree) or there isn’t anything that can be done, consider acupuncture. Acupuncture is really great at treating the little nuisances that drive you crazy and keep you from feeling normal. Tired of getting your period every 14 days, tired of feeling like you have UTI symptoms without any infection, tired of throwing hissy fits right before you bleed every month, tired of waking at 1:30am every night or going four months in between periods? Then you are ready for acupuncture.
When Would Someone Take Chinese Herbs?
Once you understand how amazing Chinese Herbs are you will want to take them for every ailment that arises, but until then here is my list of favorite things to treat with herbs: nausea, dizziness, insomnia, hiccoughs, muscle spasms, irritability, constipation, acid reflux, late periods, amenorrhea, low libido, poison ivy, frequent urination, prolapsed organs, early stages of a cold, migraines or low energy. I prescribe herbs in powders, pills and sometimes in the raw whole form. Herbs should work within your lifestyle and improve it. I’m not a purist who thinks everyone should be decocting their herbs for twelve hours a day. I want to maneuver the best herbs for your condition into your life in a way that seems easy.
What If You Are Afraid Of Needles?
No one is more afraid of needles than I am. I didn’t see my first acupuncture needle until I started at school because whenever I get a treatment I keep my eyes closed. That is what led me to practicing Japanese Style Acupuncture with fewer, smaller needles and lots of alternative therapies that are needle-free. If I can treat squirmy, wiggling infants without needles I can certainly handle the occasional adult who is nervous about moving into the world of acupuncture. You are always in control and get to say yes or no to every step of the treatment.
